You can call US policy toward Latin America the “Monroe Doctrine,” or you can rename it the “Donroe Doctrine,” but it’s the same old imperialist policy in effect for the last 200 years.

In 1994, the Zapatista movement [identified] NAFTA as a deadly blow to Indigenous farmers because “free” trade means freedom to exploit. Their alternative vision of a return to social land ownership could provide health, abundance and self-sufficiency for themselves and for all of Mexico.
