From the very beginning, Mexico’s political opposition was against the building of the Tren Maya, particularly once it became clear that it was AMLO’s signature project. Coming himself from Southern Mexico, the country’s poorest region, he wanted to promote economic development not based on the top-down neoliberal model but to ensure ordinary people actually benefitted.
Trump is on a high-speed ethnic and political cleansing campaign. One person caught in this sweep is Lelo Juarez. We hear his story from Edgar Franks, interviewed by Truthout. Lelo has been a strong advocate for immigrant farmworkers, and has organized against the temporary farmwork program Trump favors. It’s likely he was specifically singled out.

While the Tren Maya is indeed a mega project, it is a “mega” created from the micro inputs of ordinary residents. The process, as much as the product, will be part of the AMLO legacy.
